He was born on the old family homestead in Findlay township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, which later came to him by inheritance. He became a member of Montours Church early in life and was yet a young man when chosen ruling elder, which position his father and grandfather had filled before him. In 1874 they sold the farm and moved to Oakdale, where he was at once called upon to fill the same office in the church of that place. They lived on what was known as "Guy's Hill" and for many years he was engaged in the insurance business and thus became widely known.
