He was a native of Ireland, who immigrated to America, landing in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1797. After remaining three years in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, he located permanently in Derry township, Westmoreland County, where he bought a farm.

He and his wife had eight daughters and two sons.
