General Notes: Husband - Doty Guthrie
He was reared on the farm where first he saw the light, received a common school education and all his life was engaged in the pursuit of agriculture. He was desirous of obtaining a complete education, but could not stand the necessary confinement and was obliged to abandon his goal. He was a presbyterian, a trustee of the church at New Alexandria and took great interest in educational matters, serving as school director for some twelve years. A democrat in principle, he took an active part in behalf of his party's cause. He was connected with the order of Patrons of Husbandry, owned several fine farms, had excellent home improvements and was one of the most substantial citizens of the township. He was quiet and unassuming yet courteous and genial, full of humor and hospitality.
He was educated in the township schools. After he was through school, he took up farming on his father's farm and continued there until 1890. He then removed to an adjoining farm, where he remained until 1907, and at that time moved to a home in New Alexandria. Mr. Guthrie was elected to the school board in 1876, and served until 1907, resigning when he moved to New Alexandria. He served continuously except for a period of about three and a half years. When he moved to New Alexandria he was after three years elected a school director for a term of two years and a term of six years. He was the president of the New Alexandria National Bank, and was from its organization, March 15, 1903. He was connected with the Union Mutual Insurance Company, being one of the managers, and about 1904 was elected the president and adjuster of the company. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and was elected a trustee in 1876, and was also a member of session for eight years or more.
