He was born in Findlay, Ohio, and received his initial education in the public schools of that city. Much of the finishing in his education came through contact with the world, and through reading and observation. With a mechanical bent, he naturally turned his attention at an early age to the manufacturing industry. Accordingly, he entered the operating department of the Carnegie Steel Company, at its New Castle, Pennsylvania, plant, and there continued until 1916, when he joined John W. Pattison in forming the Penn Coal and Supply Company, a remarkably successful venture. This was an entirely new establishment, on an ambitious basis, dealing in coal and also builder's supplies and materials. Mr. Heck was a member of the New Castle Board of Trade and of the Lawrence and New Castle Field clubs, and worshipped with his family at the First Presbyterian Church of New Castle.
