He and his son Leslie were for several years in company with John Hunter, of Derry township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in the stock business. Both father and son united stock dealing with farming.

He was one of the largest landowners in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, making his home near the town of Blairsville, where he raised and dealt extensively in stock.
