In 1918 he was in the army in Camp Greenleaf, Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, having left Greensburg, Pennsylvania, for the service on May 27, 1918, and upon the departure of the one hundred and eighty-six draftees who left for camp that day, he was selected as the leader of the entire number.
At the time that he was inducted into the military service, he was a student of the law at Washington and Lee University at Lexington, Virginia.
