General Notes: Husband - John Hamilton Anderson

He passed his childhood and early youth in his native place, and attended the local district schools. His parents were devout members of the United Presbyterian church and attended divine service at the old church, familiarly called "Puckety," in the neighborhood, situated about five miles from their home. The son, John Hamilton, inherited the strong religious beliefs and feelings of his parents, and while still early in his teens became a member of the congregation. How earnest and devout he was may be gathered from the fact that he was made an elder of the church when only twenty-one, a position in which he continued to serve until his removal to Ohio a number of years later. After this removal he and his wife joined the United Presbyterian church at Kenton, the nearest church of this denomination to his home at Forest, and continued an elder of that church and officiated as such until the close of his life.
The education of John Hamilton Anderson was not confined entirely to the district schools that he attended in his boyhood. He was naturally fond of study, and after completing his day's work, would get out his books and study persistently until bedtime. He also managed to attend an academy in the neighborhood for some time before attaining his majority, and there made the most of his opportunities. He interested himself keenly in the politics of his time and joined the "Know Nothing" party as a young man. He was one of the first to espouse the cause of the Republican party at the time it was founded and continued a staunch member thereof until he joined the Prohibition party a number of years later. He was elected on the Republican ticket to the position of tax collector, and served for many years as a member of the School Board of Washington township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

A number of years after marriage, he and his wife, while on a visit to friends at Forest, Ohio, were greatly impressed with the educational opportunities of the place, owing to the presence of Geneva College at Northwood in the near neighborhood, and also with the great possibilities in farming there. They made up their mind that they would purchase a farm of two hundred acres situated about two miles from the town of Forest and make their home there. This, Mr. Anderson proceeded to do and immediately moved his family to the new location. The farm was naturally a fine one, and Mr. Anderson went to work to improve it greatly, stocking it with the best of everything. The life of the Andersons there was ideal until, seven or eight years later, death took from his side his beloved wife and companion. He remained on the farm only a short time thereafter. He went from there to Kenton, where he and his wife had owned a home, and there resided in practical retirement until the time of his death. He is buried in the family plot, side by side with his wife and two daughters, in the cemetery at Kenton.
