He received his education in the schools of the township, at that time Barree township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He purchased one hundred and thirty acres of land which he improved, erected houses, and converted into a fine farm. He was active in the social, political and religious affairs of the township. He was a lifelong Democrat, voting with the party, and under it held various local offices.
