He grew up at home, acquiring a limited common school education. After his marriage he settled on his a farm, which was then the property of his father. After the latter's death he inherited a part of the farm and purchased an additional portion, making in all two hundred and twenty-five acres. In 1892 he purchased the Pool farm of one hundred and twenty-three acres in Sewickley township. In 1901 he bought the old Aultman farm in Hempfield, consisting of one hundred and one acres. He was a Republican in his politics, but was not an office seeker. He was a member of the Mars Hill Baptist Church.
