General Notes: Husband - John Hastings

He was a year old when he was brought from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to Venango County by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Sutley, who came here with two sons. One of them, Henry Sutley, secured four hundred acres direct from the State (the patent for which was issued to John Hastings) and settled there in 1799, improving part of it. It was situated on Warden run. Each of the Sutley brothers obtained one hundred acres of this tract, but their shares were sold, one dying on his part of the land and the other settling in Oakland Township, Venango county. When John Hastings grew up he received his grandmother's share of two hundred acres, in two tracts, one later occupied by O. C. Sigworth and the other by his grandson Wayne C. Hastings. For twelve years John Hastings lived near Franklin, where he owned what was then known as the Cochran flats, later the Pennsylvania Railroad yards, returning thence to the farm, where all his life was spent with that exception. The land which he owned near Franklin proved to be a valuable oil field, the man he sold it to became rich thereby. The farm was steadily improved under his care. One of his earliest enterprises was the building of a dam on Warden run, where he erected a gristmill, and though he leased the mill for others to operate he continued to own it until it was discontinued, a few years before his death. The mill stood on the tract later owned by Mr. Sigworth, and John Hastings had his home near the mill site. He was an enterprising man, quite successful as a trader, owned land in New York, and was considered a wealthy man for his day. He was a Whig and Republican in turn, and interested in the politics of his time. [HVC 1919, 622]

He was born in Paradise Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and was brought by his parents to Canal Township, Venango County, in the summer of 1798, where they settled on land lying on both sides of a small stream later called Warden Run. This stream trickled through a small valley lying midway between the Sugarcreek Valley and the Frenchcreek Valley, and in this valley the Hastings settled. Here the son, John, grew to manhood. His father bought from the State a tract of land on this stream of four hundred acres, and had the patent issued in the name of the son. [PAH, 321]

During his early married life he built on the banks of Warden Run the first and only grist mill ever built in Canal Township, and he required of his millers that they grind, toll free, all grain that was carried to the mill on the back of the owner. He was a kindly, generous man and reared sixteen orphan children beside his own family. John Hastings was first a Whig and then a Republican, always active in public matters, industrious and with the pioneer's spirit he helped himself and his community. Shortly after building his mill he left Canal Township, still owning the mill, and secured land in Cranberry Township, where he and the family lived for some years. He owned and operated the tavern and ferry on the "flats" just below Franklin, where the Susquehanna and Waterford Turnpike (later the Lakes-to-Seas Highway) crossed the Allegheny River. He was genial host to many a settler and his family with their "Conestoga" wagons on their way into Ohio.
