General Notes: Husband - Carl Mattson Hastings

He lived at home and attended the schools of his neighborhood, until he went to Falls Creek, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, to learn the tailor's
trade. But after three months he returned home, preferring to devote his energies to farming, for which he felt he was best suited. He continued to work with his father until the latter's retirement, when he took charge of the farm, later becoming its owner. Realizing the importance of cattle raising, he began specializing with Herefordshire cattle, and also became a large grower of hogs. His product took front rank for quality. As his needs demanded, he made important additions to his barns, and built other structures for housing and handling his stock, and developed one of the finest and most complete farming establishments in the county, abundantly supplied with a superb water system. His barns were constructed in full compliance with the sanitary rules and regulations, and all of his work was carried on scientifically and expeditiously with modern machinery and appliances. The brand "Lone Pine" became known all over the state, he having established its reputation.
Politically Mr. Hastings was a Democrat, and like his father always adhered to the principles of his party. He served as supervisor of the township, and was on the election board a number of times. The Modern Woodmen of America held his membership, his connection being with the local lodge of that order at Marion Center.
