General Notes: Husband - John Binkerd

In 1633 two brothers left Alsace Lorraine to come to America and become pioneer settlers. The sailing vessel took six months to cross the Atlantic Ocean. On crossing they found a girl strapped to the hatch of a wrecked ship. She was still alive, and lived. On all her clothes were embroidered the name Barbara, and a coat of arms. To what royal house she belonged to was never known. When the two Von Binkerd brothers landed at or near Jamestown, Virginia, they took the girl with them to the place they were to work. This was in London [Loudoun?] County, Virginia. Later she married one of the brothers, and with their family started west. When they reached Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, the father died and the wife refused to leave his grave, but remained there with her family. Later the 400 acres of land they settled on was given to them by William Penn when he was made Governor of Pennsylvania.
Von Binkerd was great-great-grandfather of Nancy Goltz's mother, who had told this story many times. Von Binkerd had 15 children, carried a gun to shoot bears and guard against Indians. On their farm they raised their own flax and wool, carded, spun, and knit clothing for all the family. He was a master carpenter. (Whether the 15 children were his own, or off-spring from later generations is not known).
