COUNTY NATIVE KILLED IN ERIE
John W. Lusher, 84, Dies in Hospital Four Hours After He is Struck by Auto
Four hours after he was struck by an automobile on an Erie Street, John W. Lusher, 84, of Erie, a native of Rockland Township, Venango County, and a brother of two Oil City women, died in Hamet Hospital, at 7:25 Friday night.
Ralph Shaner, 45, driver of the car, was released pending an investigation. The accident occurred at the intersection of Sixth and French Streets at 3:15 while Mr. Lusher was crossing.
Mr. Lusher was born in Rockland Township and spent his early life in that district. He was a former well-known oil operator and had leases in Venango and Forest Counties. In middle age he went to the western oil fields and remained there for some years, returning east to make his home in Erie 15 years ago.
His death was due to a head injury and shock.
Surviving are two sons, Clark Lusher, of Oklahoma, and Charles, of Calfornia; two daughters, Mrs. Laveea Adams, Youngstown, O., and Mabel Lusher, address unknown; four sisters, Mrs. J.W. Noble, Erie; Mrs. Myrtle B. Payne, and Mrs. Alice Noel, Oil City, and Mrs. Harriet Beckett, Youngstown, O.; and one brother, Howard Lusher, of Tionesta.

ERIE MAN, 84, KILLED BY AUTO; 20TH VICTIM
JOHN W. LUSHER WALKS IN PATH OF CAR FRIDAY
Former Wealthy Oil Lease Operator is Victim
John Wilbur Lusher, eighty-four, 111 E. 7th st., one-time wealthy oil lease operator and driller, died in Hamot hospital at 7:25 p. m. Friday, four hours after he was struck by an auto at 6th and French sts.
The aged man, who acquired a small fortune in the Pennsylvania oil fields and then lost much of it in the west, was struck by an auto driven by Ralph Shaner, forty-five, 2063 Buffalo rd., as he crossed 6th st. from north to south.
Walked in Path of Car
The accident occurred at 3:15 p. m. Shaner said he had just rounded South park row and was proceeding east into 6th st. when Lusher walked in front of his car.
Because he was turning, Shaner said he was not traveling faster than five miles per hour. He said the aged man fell in his tracks. His only injury appeared to be on the back of the head, suffered when he struck the pavement.
Deputy Coroner Charles Leone said death was the result of the head injury and shock.
20th Death of Year
Shane told police that he has been driving for 25 years and that he had never so much as scratched a fender previously. Lusher's death brought the city's 1941 traffic fatality toll to an even 20.
He was born in Rockland township, Venango county. He acquired oil leases and for many years was an oil well driller in the vicinity of Tidioute, Hickory and that section of the state. Later he went west, suffered some reverses financially, and returned east. About 15 years ago he came to Erie. For a time he worked with the late Vernon Reed, Millcreek township, as a driller.
Received Pension
In recent years Mr. Lusher was retired. He occupied one room at the E. 7th st. address and did his own cooking on a hot plate. His income was an old age pension.
Lusher's lone hobby was hunting. Considerable hunting equipment was found in his room.
He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. J. W. Noble, 426 E. 12th st.; Mrs. Myrtle Payne, Oil City; Mrs. Alice Noel, Oil City, and Mrs. Harriett Beckett, Youngstown; a brother, Howard Lusher, Tionesta, Pa.; two sons, Clark Lusher, residing in Oklahoma, and Charles, who lives in California; two daughters, Mrs. Laveda Adams, Youngstown, and Mabel Lusher, whose address was not available.
Funeral services will be held in the Brugger funeral home at a time to be announced.
