He commenced business at Cherry Hill, Erie County, Pennsylvania, as a farmer and store-keeper. In 1862 and 1863, he was a Lieutenant in the State service, and in the fall of the latter year he moved to Iowa, where he engaged in mercantile business until his return to Pennsylvania in 1865.
