He attended the schools of Emlenton, PA, and learned the carpenter's trade with his father, which he followed until 1870. He then engaged in the furniture business in Confluence, Somerset County, PA. Closing out in 1874 he went into oil producing in Venango County. He was a Republican, and a member of the I. O. O. F. [HVC 1890, 939]

He learned the carpenter's trade in his early life, and after fifteen years as a carpenter and builder he embarked in the oil business, this having been in the year 1903, but on account of ill health he later retired in Colorado. In former years he was interested in the Farmers National Bank of Emlenton, Pennsylvania, and he was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the fraternal order of Odd Fellows and a Republican in his political affiliations.
