General Notes: Husband - Robert M. Harper
He was reared on a farm, and learned the carpenter's trade. In 1850 he went to California, worked in the gold mines for two years, then returned to Butler County, Pennsylvania, and embarked in merchandising at North Washington. In 1872 he engaged in the oil industry at Parker, and in 1890 removed to Butler. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he was a trustee, and in politics, he was an adherent of the Republican party. [HBC 1895, 774]
He received a common school education. His parents having died while he was young, he went to live with his uncle, Samuel Jack, and learned the carpenter's trade. He was one of the original "Forty-Niners" who went to California during the gold rush. He remained there four years, returning in 1853. He then engaged in the cattle business, buying and selling, and driving them east of the mountains and to Brady's Bend, Pennsylvania, now East Brady, Pennsylvania. He was later engaged in the oil business at Parker, Pennsylvania, and followed the oil development through to Petrolia, Pennsylvania. Later he engaged in the general merchandise business in North Washington until 1882, when he turned his store over to his sons, J. H. and E. T. Harper, who established the business in Butler. He retired from active business in 1882. [HBC 1927, 896]
