He was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania. In 1815, he accompanied his father to Clearfield County. He made his home in Decatur township, where for some time he worked for Hardman Phillips, but after his marriage purchased a tract of one hundred acres of timber land from Josiah Smith, of Clearfield, and opened up a farm.

He had six children with his first wife; only one was still living in 1898.
