His father was a merchant in Belfast, Ireland.
He and his wife were also natives of Belfast, Ireland. They came and settled in South Beaver township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, about 1793, and reared a family of six sons and five daughters under the teachings of the Presbyterian church.
