He received a common school education and farmed his father's place until 1865. After leaving the home farm he moved to a farm near Irwin, at what was later known as “Straw Pump.” Here he remained seventeen years, going thence to Adamsburg for two years, followed by a residence in Westmoreland City of eight months, when he removed to a location at Manor, Pennsylvania. He was a Democrat in politics. In 1848 he became a member of the Lutheran church, and in 1896 a member of the Reformed church, and served in both denominations for many years as deacon.
