He was a druggist by profession, at first locating in Titusville, Pennsylvania, and thence removing to Cleveland, Ohio. A veteran of the Civil War, he was a member of the crew of the "Roanoke," and shared in the skirmish between the "Merrimac" and the "Monitor."
