General Notes: Husband - Capt. William Harrison McCandless

He was reared on the home farm and received his educational training in the district schools. When the Civil War was in progress he enlisted, in August of 1862, as a member of Company D, 137th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and served nine months. He then remained at home until the summer of 1864, when he re-enlisted as a member of Company A, Sixth Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, bearing the rank of first lieutenant from that time until the war closed. Upon his return home he resumed agricultural pursuits on the same farm.
