The cemetery book gives the year of his birth as 1835.

He was educated in the public school, and grew up a farmer. His father gave him part of the Venango County farm and he resided there for many years, but prior to his death sold the property. He was a Republican in politics, and both he and wife were members of the Church of God.

She was from Venango County, Pennsylvania, of Dutch descent. Her par­ents moved to Crawford County, Wisconsin, where they died.
