He was a physician and surgeon of Homestead, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

He received his literary education at Washington and Jefferson College, and his medical education at the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, graduating in the class of 1875. In 1881 the doctor located in Homestead, where he rapidly built up a good practice, and was surgeon for the Carnegie, Phipps & Co. steel-mills. Dr. Gladden was a leading member of many societies, among which were the A. F. & A. M., I. O. O. F., R. A., American Mechanics and Heptasophs, and was an officer in several of the orders.
