After the completion of his studies, which were pursued in the Derry public schools, he entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and remained in their service continuously for a period of thirteen years. Relinquishing the railroad service in order to engage in mercantile pursuits, he established himself in the hardware trade at Derry, and conducted a profitable business for some years. In politics he acted with the Republican party. For two years he was a member of the school board of Derry, and was secretary of the same. He was a member of Lamonte Lodge, No. 568, F. and A. M., Forest Home Lodge, No. 942, I. O. O. F., Brotherhood of Locomotive Fireman, No. 310. He was also a member of the board of stewards.
