He was reared in Scott Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, attending the country schools and later taking a full collegiate course at Grove City, where he was graduated in the class of 1892. He then studied law with Attorney J. Norman Martin, and was admitted to the bar in 1894. He was a member of the Lawrence County Bar Association.
