General Notes: Husband - Robert Hamill

He came from the North of Ireland and was for many years a prominent business man and leading citizen of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. He was appointed by President John Adams second lieutenant, 19th Inf., U. S. Army, July 10, 1799. This was at the time when a war with France was impending and preparations were making to resist French aggressions. Under Jefferson's second administration, when our relations with Great Britain were strained to a point that rendered war imminent, he was a captain in the 5th Regiment, U. S. Inf., and he was directed, May 23, 1808, by Gen. Henry Dearborn, Secretary of War, to recruit a company of fifty men, and instructed to "establish a daily practice of learning the recruits the position of a soldier, the facings, wheelings and marching, until you shall receive more particular instructions in relation to the drill generally."
