General Notes: Husband - Lewis Hallam

For many years he conducted a blacksmith business at Washington, Pennsylvania.

He was a blacksmith by trade, and ran line teams over the National pike from Baltimore, Maryland, to the Ohio river, for the transportation of merchandise, and owned some of the finest teams that ever traveled over the road.

At the breaking out of the Civil war he closed his business in Washington, Pennsylvania, and took up the manufacture of wagons for the National Government in Wheeling, West Virginia. At the close of the struggle he returned to Washington and again built up a large business. He was originally a pronounced Whig, Abolitionist, and later a Republican, but was never an active politician. After his death, his widow, with her sons, continued the business until in August, 1891, when she died.

The sons in this family comprised the firms of R. T. Hallam & Sons, general contractors; Hallam Bros., proprietors of livery and dealers in ice, etc.

He learned the blacksmith trade in his youth and to a large extent followed the same all his life. In early days he conducted a transportation line over the National Turnpike Road from Baltimore to the Ohio River, and he had the reputation of owning the finest teams that ever traveled that road. Until the Civil War broke out he conducted a blacksmith business at Washington and then secured a contract to manufacture wagons for the U. S. government, which business necessitated his residing at Wheeling, West Virginia. After the war closed he returned to Washington and continued to work at his trade during the remainder of his active life.
