He was born Jan. 24, 1825. [SG, 18]

He was born on the old homestead, received a common school education, and assisted his father on the farm until his marriage, when he himself took charge of the estate. Like his father before him, he was an energetic, industrious and intelligent farmer, and operated a saw mill in connection with his agricultural pursuits. He was a devout member of the Presbyterian Church, of which he was an elder since he was twenty-eight years of age. In politics, he was first a Whig and then a firm Republican, and served with faithfulness and efficiency in many of the township offices. [HMC 1909, 1018]
