In 1868, he and his wife lived in Venango City, a borough which became part of Oil City in 1871 and was generally referred to as the South Side. The city directories show that in 1871, Samuel, a stone cutter, resided in a house on 2nd Street in Oil City, Venango Co., PA. By 1882, he was selling oil well supplies and living on 1st Street, Oil City, near Petroleum. In 1887-88, he was a carpenter, making his home at 110 W 1st Street, Oil City. The next two directories (1889-90 and 1891-92) shows he was in the monument business and still living on W 1st Street. [PAR, 132]
