General Notes: Husband - James Dunlap Gillan
He was educated in the public schools, and worked on his father's farm until he was twenty years old. He then became storekeeper and gauger in the United States Internal Revenue service, in which he served eight years. He clerked in the store of his brother, William M., at St. Thomas, for three years; in 1882 he purchased his brother's store and continued in the mercantile business. He was appointed postmaster at St. Thomas by President McKinley. He was a member of the Knights of the Golden Eagle.
