He and his wife were natives of Scotland; they came to the United States when each was about thirteen years of age. They resided in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and were there married and had two children; they then removed to Nova Scotia, until about 1840 when the family returned to Schuykill County. From there, about 1844, they came to Clarion County, Pennsylvania, where they settled on a piece of wild land and cleared up a farm. The father was an ordained minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and died in Ohio, in 1864, while in active work.
