General Notes: Husband - Philip Galley
His father joined the Revolutionary army as a musician and died soon after enlistment. After two years his mother married again and the son, Philip, was taken in charge by his uncle, Philip Stern; he was taught weaving and the grafting of trees.
He was a weaver by occupation, and understood the throw of the shuttle to perfection. He removed to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in 1778, and located in Tyrone township, where he purchased one hundred acres of land, upon which he devoted all his time and labor, having in great measure abandoned the loom. He was engaged quite extensively in
raising fruit trees.
He married and they emigrated [from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania?] to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and settled on the Youghiogheny river, in the midst of what became the famous coke region.
He was a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and went from there to Frederick County, Maryland. In 1799 he purchased one hundred and a half acres of land of Andrew Schallenberger, in Tyrone township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, a portion of the original Meason warrant, and immediately after his marriage in Lancaster County went there to reside. His family of eight sons and three daughters all reached maturity, married, and reared families of their own in and near Tyrone.
He first lived on land which later belonged to the Morgan Coal- and Coke-Works. He was the first fruit-raiser in that region, and continued to be largely engaged in the cultivation of fruit-trees until 1835. In 1820 he sold his farm to his eldest son, Peter, and purchased that of Joseph Huston, in the township of Franklin, Fayette County, living there until his death. This farm, lying on the river, and on the line between the townships of Franklin and Dunbar, was later owned by his son Henry.
After settling in Washington County, Maryland, he sold his land and with his only son Peter, moved to what was at that time considered the far west, settling in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and in Tyrone township, on a farm that was later on the line of the Broad Ford and Mt. Pleasant Railroad, Morgan station being on a part of the home farm. There they lived until ten more children were born. He was the first man in the county to engage in the nursery business. He accumulated wealth rapidly, and bought a fine river bottom farm in Franklin and moved there in 1821. He became a successful grower of fruit trees as well as a prominent farmer of his day. After assisting each of his eight sons to a farm he retired from business and gave his home to his two youngest sons, Abraham and Henry. He remained in the old mansion house until his death.
