His early life was spent on the farm and at school. For two years he worked in a store. He read medicine with Dr. Wick, at New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and afterwards attended lecture courses at the Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia, and also at the Cleveland Medical College, and was graduated in 1876. After graduating he settled for two years in Salem, Armstrong County, and in 1878 he moved to Lickingsville to practice medicine and surgery.
He attended the local schools until fourteen years of age, and then secured a position in the store of M. S. Arnold, where he was employed for some time. Subsequently he attended the Reedsburg Academy, graduating from that institution in 1873, and then commenced the study of medicine in the office of Dr. J. A. Wick, in New Bethlehem, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, where he was a student for one year. In 1874-75 he attended the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, and later graduated in a medical college at Cleveland, Ohio. He began the practice of his profession in New Salem, Armstrong County, where he remained until 1878, when he located in Lickingville, Clarion County. In 1888 he moved to Leeper, where he soon built up an excellent practice. He also erected a building, in which he conducted one of the best drug stores in the place.
