The family is one of great antiquity, the name Hadley being derived from De Haddeligh, which in earl­ier English meant “of the woods.” The immigrant ancestor of the line in America, Leonard Hadley, came from England and landed in Boston, Massachusetts, prior to 1664. He went to Connecticut, then to Long Island, and finally he and a party of men and their wives settled at Elizabethtown, Essex County, New Jersey.
