General Notes: Husband - John Gaddis

The Gaddis family was founded in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, by Thomas, John, Robert and Henry Gaddis, sons of William Gaddis, who came from Apple Pie Ridge, near Winchester, Virginia, to Fayette County, about the year 1780.

In the tide of emigration from Virginia that crossed the Alleghanies to the "Redstone country" in 1785, was John Gaddis.
He bought 295 acres of land, called Gaddistown, near the site of Upper Middletown, and engaged in farming. He was a leading member of the Baptist church at Uniontown.

The date of the coming of John Gaddis to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, is given as 1785, but this is the date of his land warrant in North Union township; he had been in the county as early as 1780. He settled in North Union township in 1785, where he purchased about three hundred acres of land with an allowance of six per cent for roads. The tract joined that of his brother Robert, giving the locality the name of "Gaddistown." His warrant was dated February 7, 1785, and a patent was granted March 30, 1786. He purchased a tract of forty and a half acres adjoining "Gaddistown," which he named "Oxford," and another of sixteen acres called "Cambridge." Warrants for these were issued March 6, 1794. He was one of the first justices of the peace and a member of the Great Bethel Baptist Church of Uniontown, holding the office of deacon.

He and his wife were Quakers, and of English descent.
