As a youth he attended the public schools of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, being graduated from the high school. His first business experience was as clerk for the Hartman Manufacturing Company in the capacity of clerk, his next service being with the Peerless Wire Matting Company, with which concern he remained for one year. In September, 1894, he began a lasting association with the Keystone Driller Company, as book-keeper. He eventually rose to the position of assistant general manager.
He and his wife were members of the Reformed Presbyterian Church.
