General Notes: Husband - John Boyd Gaut
He was born in Barn Run, South Huntingdon township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. When about eighteen years old he moved to the old Gaut home which was owned by his grandfather, where he remained until he had attained his majority. His father died when he was just eleven years of age, so that much of the management of the farm fell upon his youthful shoulders. When twenty-one years of age, however, he left the parental roof and made his way to Scottdale, Westmoreland County, where he learned the trade of carpenter. After serving his apprenticeship in this trade, he continued to work as a journeyman for some ten years, and in 1898 finally abandoned it and once more took up farming. In the year 1906 he bought a farm owned by his uncle, John Gaut, which was originally the property of one Jacob Zook, a place of one hundred acres, very fertile and in a high state of cultivation. Here Mr. Gaut made his home for some years and here he devoted himself to farming. While in a sense his operations could be called general farming, he nevertheless gave his principal attention to the raising of fine stock, and had one of the finest herds of Guernsey cattle in that region. Another specialty was Berkshire swine, with which he had extraordinary success.
