He was educated in the common schools of Hayfield township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and completed his education in the Edinburgh State Normal School. At the age of eighteen years he commenced to teach in Crawford County, and then became associated with the Boomer & Boschert Press Company, a connection which existed for a period of thirty-six years or more. His position with this concern is that of traveling salesman. He was also the owner of a fine farm of two hundred and fifty acres, which he cultivated for many years. Small fruits and general farm produce were his main output. He made some valuable experiments in the cultivation of small fruits, which proved profitable to all who followed his example.
