General Notes: Husband - Archibald Henderson

He was probably born at or near Coote Hill, County Cavan, Ireland, and came to America with his parents in 1795. He grew to manhood in the Henderson settlement, securing an elementary education in the log schoolhouse of that period. In early manhood, he purchased a farm in Venango County near Raymilton where he resided during the remainder of his life.

In 1796 five Henderson brothers made a location at Hendersonville, in the township of Worth, Mercer County, PA. One of them, Archibald, moved into Mineral Township a few years later.

General Notes: Wife - Sarah Gates

She a woman of more than average education and intelligence, who was one of the first school teachers in Mineral Township, Venango County, PA, and had considerable reputation as a fine writer.

She had the advantages of a liberal education in the schools of Connecticut and prepared for the teaching profession. She taught school for a number of years in Granville, MA. Later she went to visit a sister who, having married in Connecticut, migrated with her husband to Paynes Corner, OH. The Henderson neighborhood being in need of a teacher one year, was advised by a traveling missionary preacher that a young woman by the name of Sarah Gates could be secured at Paynes Corner, OH. William Henderson, riding one horse and leading another, went to Paynes Corner and brought Sarah Gates to the Henderson settlement to teach their school, little realizing that he was bringing a future sister-in-law, for a little later she was married to Archibald. It is said that she was a splendid penman and could, with a quill pen, write the Lord's Prayer in a circle the size of a four shillingpiece. She prepared her two sons for medical college, both graduating from Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia. This family were members of the Presbyterian church.
