His educational opportunities were very limited, the greater part of his youth being passed in agricultural duties; but by energy and perseverance he overcame these early disadvantages, and became a thoroughly cultured gentleman. He and his brother John, neither of whom ever married, resided on the old family homestead, which contained ninety-eight acres of good land. They conducted an extensive business in general farming and stock raising. In politics they were earnest workers in the Republican party, though never accepting official positions.
