He received his education in the public schools of his native place, but at the age of fifteen years gave up his studies and went to Jeannette, Pennsylvania, where he secured a position in the carbon works there. Here he remained for a period of some five years and then entered the employ of McGrath & Garvin, in the capacity of delivery boy. This concern afterwards became the firm of Garvin & Company and there he remained until the year 1913, when he formed a partnership with his brother, George R. Garvin, and the two young men purchased a general hardware business in Greensburg. In this enterprise they were successful and built up a large business.
