He graduated at Glade Run Academy, at Washington and Jefferson College and at the Theological Seminary at Allegheny, Pennsylvania. He taught at Covode, Indiana County, at West Alexandria, Washington County, and at New Texas, Allegheny County. He was pastor of the Presbyterian church at Paxton, Illinois, and later pastor of Grace church, Peoria, Illinois.
