He went west when a young man and lived in several places in the west, spending several years in Montana, also living in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Fairfield, Iowa. In 1853 he was married in Indianapolis. After the death of his wife he went to Fairfield, Iowa, where he made his home with his niece, Mrs. Wm. H. Young, until a few weeks before his death, when he went to his brother James' home. He was of a cheery, kindly, though modest and retiring disposition, a great lover of home and always ready to help others who needed his help. He died at the residence of his brother, James Eckert, in Fairfield.
