He was born on the family homestead, which he cultivated until about 1913, when he gave up farming and entered the employ of the Duquesne Light Company, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. He was a Republican, and held nearly every township office, also served as county auditor. He held the fourteenth degree of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in Masonry.
