He was born in Elizabeth township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he was educated in the common schools. He cultivated the home farm in Sewickley township, Westmoreland County, until six or eight years after his marriage, when he moved to another farm, of which he had been the owner for some time. He had also previously purchased the old Marchand farm (near his home farm). He owned, too, the old Penny farm which was a part of his inheritance. He was a large holder of bank stock in McKeesport and Pittsburgh and possessed residence and business properties in McKeesport. He was a Democrat in politics, and was a member of the United Presbyterian church.
