He was brought up on the farm and educated in the common schools and the academy at Waterford, Pennsylvania. When in his senior year, he embarked in mercantile business in Waterford, and there he remained several years. He came to Erie City in 1856, and carried on same business for about sixteen years. He then was connected with the Taper Sleeve Pulley Works, Erie.
