He was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and went with his father's family to Indiana when twelve years old. He became a successful farmer, and for more than forty years he occupied a farm a short distance from Shelburn, Sullivan County, Indiana.
He and his wife were both members of the Presbyterian Church.
