General Notes: Husband - Hon. George H. Graham
He came to Butler County, PA, in 1845, and lived in Parker Township, near Martinsburg. In 1862, he removed to Fairview Township. He was in the service during the Civil War as a member of Company G, One Hundred and Thirty-seventh Pennsylvania Regiment. Enlisting as a private, he became Regimental Quartermaster, and subsequently was on the staff of Gen. Paul as Brigade Quartermaster. He was been engaged in the oil business for several years, also in surveying and civil engineering. He was a teacher for several years, and Principal of Sunbury Academy from 1867 to 1870. In 1878, he was elected a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from Butler County. [HBC 1883, 373]
He lived in Venango County, PA, until he was about twelve years of age, attending school for a time at Emlenton, and later taking a university course at Allegheny College. After his parents moved to near Bruin, Butler County, he worked in both the ore and coal mines for a short time, when, through natural ability and study he fitted himself for other work. He has done a vast amount of surveying, has been a civil engineer, has done considerable farming and oil producing, and for many years he was considered the most successful public school teacher in the county. When the Civil War opened, Mr. Graham entered the army, enlisting as a member of Company G, One Hundred and Thirty-seventh Regiment, Pa. Vol. Inf., under Colonel Bossart, and shortly afterward was commissioned quartermaster of the regiment and served on the staff of Gen. J. E. Paul. He was with his regiment at Antietam, South Mountain, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, and was mustered out at Harrisburg, in June, 1863.
Mr. Graham returned to Bruin and during the winters of 1857-8 and 1859, he taught school in Parker and Washington Townships, and in the spring of 1867 became a teacher in the West Sunbury Academy, where he continued to teach until 1869. In the fall of 1874 he made Fairview his home. He filled all the borough offices, was school director for thirty years, served as jury commissioner, was a justice of the peace, and in 1880, he was a member of the State Legislature, giving good service.
