He attended the country schools of the neighborhood, and has since remained upon his birthplace. He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian Church at Canonsburg, and in political opinion he was a Democrat.

The old family homestead contained 295 acres in North Strabane township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. After the death of the father, John Fulton, it came under the management of three of his sons, Robert D., John and James C.
