He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he received his education in the common schools. At the age of seventeen he entered the service of the Allegheny Valley Railroad Company as telegraph operator, and four years later was appointed station agent at New Kensington. For six years he represented the borough of Parnassus in the council. He affiliated with Verona Lodge, No. 548, F. and A. M., of Verona, in which he passed all chairs, and his political allegiance was given to the Republican party.
